Installing Pixel Auditor

Add Pixel Auditor to Chrome, pin the icon, and open the side panel.

Pixel Auditor needs no configuration. Install it, click the icon, audit. Here's the full path from nothing to a working side panel.

Install from the Chrome Web Store

  1. Open the Pixel Auditor listing on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click Add to Chrome and confirm the permissions prompt. The whole bundle is around 427 KB.
  3. Pin Pixel Auditor to your toolbar (puzzle-piece icon → pin) so the icon is one click away.
  4. Open any website. Click the Pixel Auditor icon — the side panel slides in and starts scanning.
tip The first scan completes in 200–400 ms. Pixel Auditor re-scans at 0 ms, 800 ms, 2.5 s, and 5 s after navigation to catch async-loaded tags.

Compatible browsers

Pixel Auditor is a Manifest V3 extension. It works in:

  • Google Chrome (114+)
  • Microsoft Edge (Chromium)
  • Brave
  • Arc
  • Any Chromium-based browser with the Side Panel API

Firefox is not supported — there is no equivalent Side Panel API at the time of writing.

What happens on first run

Click the icon on a page and the side panel opens immediately. The Tags tab populates as detection completes, then the Live Events tab begins streaming as fires are intercepted. Audit and dataLayer tabs become useful after a few seconds of activity.

why If you opened the panel after the page already loaded, hit reload — Pixel Auditor only intercepts calls made after its content script has injected.

Updating

Chrome auto-updates extensions in the background. To check what version you're on, visit chrome://extensions, find Pixel Auditor, and look at the version number. v2.0.0 is the public release; see What's new in 2.5 for the changelog.
